I live in Minnesota & we are in the midst of a big snow ...

Sent to Pet Experts March 13, 2006 9:55 a.m.

I live in Minnesota & we are in the midst of a big snow storm today, so our vet is closed. Six weeks ago we got a 8 month old black lab mix from a dog rescue. He is haas been healthy, & we did give him he worm pills as directed. Yesterday he had gas which was a bit abnormal for him. This morning he has very loose stools. When his is just about done with his business here are several drops of blood. He has had to go out 3 times in the last 30 minutes. Any home remidies to get us through untill the snow storm ends & the vet opens?

Do you have power?
Do you have any of the following:
Sugar
salt
raw chicken you could boil
whie rice
cottage cheese
pepto bismal or kayopectate
decaffinated tea
Labs are CHEWERS! Do you see any evidence of a chewed object - if so - what?

We have an 85lb black lab and if it is not nailed down it will be in his mouth - so I am experienced with this breed chewing and licking.
My main concern would be the ingestion of a sharp or splintery non food item with this breed.
It is most likely that he ingested something from the trash or around the house and it has caused a digestive upset.
Give him one teaspoon of pepto OR kayopectate.
Boil the chicken(skinless) in unseasoned water til very soft -Add 2 ounces of white rice and a pinch of salt and sugar. Feed him nothing but that or cottage cheese until your vet opens. You can repeat the pepto in 8 hours, if necessary.
If you have any more problems or he keeps vomiting - just relist your question. I will be here all day and night and get right back to you.
I do not have to worry about snow - just huricanes as I am in the plywood state (florida)
Please let me know how he (name?) is doing after you try these suggestions.
