I am taking care of a 14-year-old German Shepherd - up to ...

Sent to Pet Experts March 02, 2006 8:08 p.m.

I am taking care of a 14-year-old German Shepherd - up to now in excellent health - had undergone some stress, including moving, being placed in a very small kennel for a couple of days, then came to us. He was fine for a day or so, then had severe bright red blood diarrhea. I did a flotation and he was loaded with hookworms, roundworms, coccidia, and a ton of pine pollen. We dosed him with panacur, ivermectin and albon yesterday. Today his eyes are swollen almost shut and very bloodshot, his mouth is very sore (left side mostly) and he is salivating profusely with some tinge of blood, possibly pus. Vet said dose w/benadryl, which we did, and agreed with all other treatments. Now he is disoriented and his mouth is very painful to touch. Impossible to look inside his mouth without sedation - gave 3 cc Pennacillin, assuming abcess. With everything else we've done, would dexamethasone be contraindicated? Any suggestions for keeping him comfortable until we get him to the vet?

The only thing that you can use at home for pain is aspirin.

You can get dosage information and read about precautions here:

If I were you, I would want to see the vet with him tonight, even if you have to pay extra for an after hours call.

Merely telling me to get him to a vet ER did not give me any indication of what may be going on. I sat up with him, he drank water, was about the same this morning and I'm going to the vet now.

I did not just tell you to go to the vet with him. I also gave you dosage information about aspirin, an anti-inflammatory to relieve pain.

I am glad to hear that you are seeing the vet with him today.

Let me know if you have more questions after your visit.
