I have a maltese who is 16 years young. I realize that she is old. My question is as of late, she has been drinking a great amount of water. Also, her tail which is usually curled up is flat against her butt. Are these just signs of her age? She does not seem to be in pain, shall I take her to the vet any way?

The excess drinking can be a sign of illness including diabetes, Cushings disease (an adrenal gland problem), or kidney failure.
Her tail may be down as she doesn't feel really good.
I would bring her to the vet and have him check her out and likely they will want to do blood work too to check for illnesses.
She might feel a lot better with the right meds.
Hope this helps you!
