Question

house training

Sent to Pet Experts February 26, 2006 12:20 p.m.

our havanese puppy was seven months old when he was neutered..prior to that he was just about house broken. he had an undescended testicle which he had removed. he was boarded at the vet while he had the procedure for 5 nights while we were briefly out of town. since we got him back he has been having alot of accidents in the house. could there be any reason due to the opperation that could explain him going backwards in being house trained. what could we do.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

There could be a couple of reasons for this. Sometimes when dogs are boarded, they will start to "hold it" because they want to keep their area clean. When they realize that this is impossible, they stop seeing their area as their own and are forced to soil it. This behavior continues at home.

Aside from that, the surgery can cause some inappropriate soiling because of the pain that is associated with it.

I would see the vet for a urine culture to rule out a medical issue and then go back to the basics with housebreaking if this proves to be false.

Let me know if you still have questions.

Our Havanese is 9 months old we are feeding him one evening meal, because we tried feeding him the three, we than went to two which he still wasn't eating. We then went to the one meal at 4:oo PM, since then he will have movements 4:30 am , 9:30 am, 12:oo noon isn't this too much? Prior to the operaton he would only do two 6:00 am and 3:00 pm in the afternoon. We have not changed his diet at all - before and after the operation. Do you have any suggestions or input.
