Question

I have a Beagle, who is a male about 10-11 years old.

Sent to Pet Experts February 25, 2006 5:44 p.m.

I have a Beagle, who is a male about 10-11 years old. Recently, he was experiencing pain when I touch his back,(near his tail), his underside, and the area where his right rear leg attaches to his torso, (the pocket-like area). Also and the same time, my dog is urinating in the house, (when I am at work). He is housebroken, and a inside dog. My vet said he is having an arthritic inflammation. I informed the vet amobut the urination problems. I had his urine sample checked. There were no indications of any infections(kidney, bladder, or uriniary tract). The vet said that he could be stressed over his pain,(he cannot jump up on the bed or his chair), or maybe he is incontinent. Could my dog have an enlarged prostate? The urination problem began when he was having problems jumping up on things. He walks, runs, eats, OK. His behavior and dispositon is the same. What are the symptoms of an enlarged prostrate? If he has incontinence issues, what can be done about that? I really need some answers, before I that him back to the vet. Thanks, and have a nice day.

Optional Information:
Age: 11; Male; Breed: Beagle

Already Tried:
For the pain, I given my dog glucosamin/chondrodin supplement. I have given him dermaxx 25mg. this was done per my vet. The urination issue hasn't been treated. Vet thinks it is incontience or stress-related.

You mention about your pup having a problem jumping up on a bed and other things, in addition to being sensitive when you touch him near his tail, on his back. And then there's the incontinence.

I would strongly suggest that your pup may have a back problem, possibly a pinched nerve due to a disc problem. Older dogs who are sensitive in this area can exhibit tenderness and yelp even when you just walk near them if they are hurting.

Urinary incontinence can be the result of a neurological problem as there is a loss of control going on. I'd have an xray of the little guy's spine to see if there's anything mechanically going on before anything else.

Hope this helps! Barbara
