When I got my 4 mo old Rottweiler pup-she had mild pulmonic stenosis and I was told it would not interfere with a normal life span.At age 3 1/2 ,after a collapse, the Veterinary Heart Institute told me her congenital heart defect had advanced to moderate -to -severe. At age 5 she had another collapse and the vet said it was a kidney bacterial infection that she responded to immediately with antibiotics. At age 6 ,after another collapse and bloodwork, she was diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease. Her poor appetite responded to b-complex injections/cimitidine every 3 months for the next 10 months. Then a b-complex and steroid injection was needed. She suddenly developed severe breathing problems and a distended abdomen. The vet said she had heart failure,an enlarged spleen(probably cancer) and said I should put her to sleep immediately. I took her to another vet who has been treating her for heart failure for 3 months but the lasik is not working well. After an extensive internet search, I find to my regret ,that all her symptoms have always been a result of pulmonic stenosis with kidney problems secondary. I also see that there is a new soft tipped catheter proceedure that is 85% successful for pulmonic stenosis. Is it too late for her?

I'm very sorry to hear that your Rottweiler has had such a tough go with illness all her life. Even with misdiagnosis, she is obviously been pulling through from your love and care and her strong will to be with you. Between these two factors, your and her love for each other, it may not be too late for her to have this procedure. The procedure does have a decent success rate, but that is dependent on underlying factors of the particular dog's health, strength and age.

However, since I cannot examine her and read through every medical test she has had, you are going to need to rely on the vet that you trust the most to guide you with this decision.

thank you for your response-you hit the nail on the head-this dog is a fighter. She has seen nine different vets throughout her life-each one contradicts the other. This last one was at one point 95% sure she had cancer of the spleen after an ultrasound and xrays showed no tumors, also no cancer cells,no enlarged lymph nodes were found. Since the enlargement of the spleen has receded recently ,he now suspects ticks. My reseach on the web has clearly shown that in pulmonic stenosis the pulmonic vein enlarges and therefore the spleen and liver enlarges also. At one point he was talking about removing the spleen. I am beyond frustration. I have been reading about balloon valvuloplasty. She is 7 years old--I think I am one year too late,,she has already had a chest tap. You sound like a human being

What did your Rottie succumb to and at what age? I live in a high growth area in Florida with too many people and too many dogs.
Her vet now says she is dying .She has an ammonia breath,an arrhythmia, and he says that when she needs another chest tap "we will have to talk".
She is my first dog and the guilt I will have to live with is my not "taking the bull by the horns " much sooner. My research has shown me mistakes all over the place and gross ineptness.
You are so right on--she needed a specialist all along. I am planning to take her to the Florida Veterinary Specialists. Thank you for your compassion-it means a lot.
