Sent to Pet Experts February 19, 2006 4:02 p.m.

I woke up this morning to a kitchen floor covered with urine and blood. I have a Bichon and she has never had this problem before. Our vet is out of town and the vet on call really didn't seem to want to really help. I have cephalexin that is hers. The vet said to give it to her. Well, she threw it up. So.............what do I do?

Well, there is no after hour vet where I live. The one I talked to this morning was not concerned and he told me to use the medicine that I had.
So, I gave her one dose without food and she threw up
I fixed her some rice and gave it to her and she has done fine. She isn't drinking much. I will be at my vet when the doors open tomorrow.

thank you for your reply. I put chicken broth in the rice. she really enjoyed it. while we are with her she won't use the bathroom on the floor but when we go to bed I just hate to think what will be waiting on me in the morning.

to make matters worse she is blind. she also has a tendency to chew on her hind leg until it is raw. Why does she do that? I take her in and they give her a shot and antibiotic and she is fine for awhile and then she does it all over again. I keep asking the vet if she has an anxiety problem but he never comments.

I have tried the sock thing and she just eats it off.
she never did this until she went blind. then she started. that was why I wondered if she was suffering from major stress.

Stress could be a factor but allergies are a more likely cause.

If you think that this is because of stress, there's a great homeopathic anxiety medication that we have used wtih a lot of success. It's called homeopet (www.homeopet.com) and you can get it at most petsmart stores.

Thank you for the info on the anxiety stuff. I will look into that.

I took her this a.m. to the vet and she did have a bladder infection but there were no crystals in her urine. She is so much better.

Is there a food that you prefer to feed dogs?

Glad to hear that there your fears were founded and that you were able to see the vet.

I am a big fan of Science Diet foods. They have a great prescription diet that is wonderful for these dogs with urinary issues. You can get them through your vet.

Let me know if you still have questions.

Science diet makes her so sick. She just throws up. Do you have any other suggestions?

Eukanuba also has great prescription diets. You might want to check these out as well. Your vet also probably sells a couple of brands that would work well. The brands really depend on where you live and what's most common in your area so it's hard for me to recommend a prescription diet.

I will try Eukanuba. Our vet only sells Science diet. I was feeding her purina but when she licked herself that fur began to turn a red color. So, I decided to go back to the food I fed her when I first got her because her fur was always white. I feed her kibbles and bits....which I am sure isn't the best for her. I did ask the vet if that was what caused the infection but he felt like it wasn't. I do wonder.

thank you so much for all of your help.
