I have a 7 month old Maltese I picked up from the breeder on Thursday, on Friday I took him to the Vet and the puppy was in good health except for an ear infection. My worry is in the days I have had him, he has not eaten and drinks so little and has only had two bowel movements, I have tried changing his food, but that still did not work, what should I do?

Optional Information:
Age: <1; Male; Breed: Maltese

Already Tried:
Changing food brands and types of bowls. I have also tried putting some in my hand to feed him.

Congrats on your new puppy. Don't worry...sometimes it takes puppies a good week to get on track. Go back to the food he is used to...whatever the breeder was feeding him...a sudden change in food will cause tummy upset and is not worth the aggrivation of diarreah. If you are not crate training, you should. Get a crate big enough for him to lay down and be able to have his food and water in with him. This will also aid in housebreaking, and it will give him a sense of security. Be patient, as with kids, when they are not feeling well they don't want to eat and with the antibiotics, his tummy is probably not up to par to eat. Good luck to you and I hope this helped.

Since you did have him checked at the vet and his health was good except for the ear infection, then I would be more apt to think that he is going through an adjustment period.

But we don't want that adjustment to make him unhealthy. So you need to keep in hydrated. Get some unflavored Pedialyte and give him 4 droppers every 45 minutes for 2 hours. And also add some to his drinking water. This way his water will be better for him even if he takes only a little.

I would keep his food the same as what the breeder was feeding him. But you can cook some chicken or ground turkey in a little bit of water to make a gravy (no seasonings or oil) and feed him a little of this mixed in his food or just give him a 1/2 cup of it straight. If you can get him to eat some, it may feel special and it will give him some good nutrition.

Remember he is under a great deal of stress leaving his old home and coming to his new one. He does not realize that he is staying and you will love him dearly. He may be a little depressed and missing his other family. Just keep being gentle and loving like you have been and he should come around quickly.

If you feel he is getting worse, let us know.

Reply to Christina A. Tavanian's Post: Yes, I hope that will help. He seems to only sleep and play sometime, he should be more active to me. Am I doing something wrong?

No you are not doing anything wrong. We often feel as though a puppy is going to go full speed when we get them home. He would be more apt to go full speed if he were 3 months old. But he is a little more mature and is taking in everything around him.

If he doesn't eat in the next day or so, you can call the vet and ask him if there is anything else that should be checked on your puppy that he didn't already do.

If you are in an area where you can walk him, take him for some short walks on his leash. This is sometimes a wonderful way to bond with a dog. It may also get his mind on other things if he is depressed. The exercise will also build an appetite. And he will just enjoy being with you, because dogs love to go for walks.

Oh yeah one other thing, when you talk to him try to pretend that nothing is wrong, be happy and cheerful (dogs pick up on our moods and often mimic them). As people we tend to talk in a sad tone when someone or a pet doesn't feel well, like "what's the matter puppy. come on...don't you want to eat." (I think you can get the tone by the phrases I wrote) They pick up on this too, and sometimes feel that something is wrong. So try to be happy! ;-)

Check in tomorrow with me and let me know how it is going.
