I have a Mini-schaunzer. He is about 11 years old. Once before he contracted some kind of skin infection which started with his genitals and progressed to most of the skin over his back. This infection caused his skin to become thick and leatery and caused him great disconfort for many weeks. The vet prescribed an antibiotic but it still took a long time for any results to be seen. He now has this same kind of ailment with his genitals looking red and raw but it has not yet progressed to his other skin yet. What is it and is there anything that can be done to stop this quick?

I can not say for sure but he is constantly licking it and if I rub his back near his tail he pushes into my hand. The parts where his skin is red and raw seem very sensitive to him and he is unable to sit on the carpet but prefers instead to lay on cool smooth surfaces. He whines and paces and is unable to lay still when in a room with carpet.
