I have a 4 month old female norwegian elkhound/sheperd
Sent to Pet Experts February 02 02:38 AM

I have a 4 month old female norwegian elkhound/sheperd mix puppy. She has these bumps on the inside of her ears, there is no pattern, pen top size, no rash anywhere. She scratches & bites at herself all over. She has no fleas, exema, or skin lesions.I have had her to several vets for opinions with no answer as to what is wrong. A skin scraping was done & hair, nothing showed up under the microscope. She was given a cortizone shot & ivermect shot on 1/23/06 with no relief. She is still scratching and the bumps have not changed. Here is her medical history that I know about. She was treated for kennel cough w/ clavamox before I bought her on 12/29/05 from the pet store. On 1/4/06 bacteria showed up in her fecal exam, biosol liquid med given for 10 days. On 1/14 she was seen again by vet, clavamox was       given for 10 days for UTI. On 1/24 skin scraping was done & due to frequent urination another 7 days of clavamox was given. Allergy shampoo & benedryl were of no relief to her either. Biopsy is what was recomended but I don't have $600.00 to continue. Please can you help.
Thanks,
Tina

Dear Tina,

In this description, I did not see if she was checked for ear mites. Microscopic mites can invade your pet and cause the symptoms you describe.

The other thing besides allergies and mites, is a fungal infection. However, you said that a skin scraping was done, and a fungal infection would have been detected.

Let me know if you have had our dog checked and treated for mites, and ear mites in particular. (they would have taken some ear wax and looked at it under the microscope. The mites get stuck in the wax, so they are easy to find).

If there are no mites or fungal infections, then I have to say that your pet may simply have allergies or dry skin (eczema).

Reply to Ed Johnson's Post: Your answer was vague. I see I spelled eczema wrong in my question above. In all shelby's vet visits none saw ear mites & stated she did not have eczema. I have more to add, she received her 2nd ivermect shot on 2/2/06 along with my other dog (who is also scratching & biting himself but he doe not have the bumps in his ears) With little relief and now there are more bumps in Shelby's ears. The inside of her ears look like waffles. Also when loving her up & spending time on the floor with her my face itches like crazy. I am fine when I'm away from her & it is not a constant itch. My mother experienced the same feeling when I took Shelby up to her house for a visit, she stated that it felt like she had lice on her face. There is more to this than an allergy.

What do I need to do for myself,& the other pets in the house. Do I have to treat carpeting, furniture, bedding ? How long does the elimination of sarcoptes mites take, if this is what she has ? Why after having the 2nd Ivermectin shot would the bumps in her ears increase ?

If you read the article on this parasite that I supplied you then you will see that the mites cannot be infective after being off the animal for very long.
If the other pets are itching they all need to be treated not just one of them or infection will keep going through them all.
The ear bumps could indicate an allergy or a response of her immune system to the poison.
Food allergies could be making those bumps worse.
If your vet doesn't seem to have the right answers for you then I'd suggest seeing a veterinary dermatologist. This site might help you find one

You could also ask your vet about using one of the other treatments for mange that the article suggests.
