i have a basett hound and she is about 10 months old.

i have a basett hound and she is about 10 months old. she is currently in heat.....is it normal to be in season so early? I am planning on getting her spayed but was told to wait until between 9 to 12 months to do so. How long do they typically stay in heat and should i get her spayed while she is heat? What are the health risks of her going into heat and then getting her spayed? thanks
