Question

Beagle nose sore

Sent to Pet Experts January 27, 2006 10:41 p.m.

I live in the Keys & own a beagle who's just over a year. He has developed an abrasion on the left side of his snout under his whiskers. Doesn't seem to be painful.Since I'm a ER nurse I would like treat him at home, but have no clue as what it could be or what to apply. Could you help? He's had it for approx 1 week . It really doesn't seem to bother him. Never owned a dog before. We did change him over to Frontline this past month, & he is outside alot & yard does have coral dust?I'm clueless?

Doesn't really rub it much that I notice. It is round, red & irritated along with hair loss. It might be slighly larger than when fisrt noticed, but not very much it's approx 2-2.5cm in dia.

It could be a few things...one is ringworm which as you know being a nurse, can be transmitted to humans..the another is a hotspot or moist dermatitis which is the keys where its highly humid, is a possiblity...lastly is a spider/bug bite but he would probably be itching that. I would try and keep it clean and dry and you can try using Lotrimin cream and see if it helps. It will take a couple weeks to see improvement but it shouldn't worsen if thats what it is. If it goes away with the cream then it may be ringworm. I would be sure to wash well after touching the area just in case. Should it get bigger or worsen then a vet visit is needed.
