We have a 1/2 German Shepherd 1/2 Alaskan Malamute that will be 2 years old in April. When he is sleeping he seems to breathe normally, but when he is just sitting and resting he often has very rapid and shallow breathing. Is this just normal panting or should we be concerned? He can be sitting and resting for quite a long time and still be taking the little short breaths. Thanks for your help.

Rapid breathing can often be caused by some kind of stress. You should evaluate the situation and see if there are any new stresses.

Obstructions of the nose, tracheal problems and laryngeal problems can also cause increased (or seem to cause) increased respiration.

If your dog is not on heartworm prevention, he might be showing clinical signs of heartworm disease or other heart problem.

If it continues, you need to see your vet as soon as you can.
