My dog has an abrasion under her forearm in the pit area. What type of home first aid can I provide for her while waiting for a vet appointment?

Hi There,

If the abrasion is not deep, and just a surface injury or scrape, you could first wash it gently with a soft, warm cloth with water, and then perhaps, if it is not bothering her too much, you can always clean it with hydrogen peroxide, or put on a little bit of Neosporin antibiotic cream. If the abrasion is deep, but not bleeding, just try to keep it clean and try to keep her from licking the area if possible.

It is very commendable that you care that much to have an appt. made with your dog's vet. They will check the area, and they definitely will ask you how the abrasion occurred, and probably give you an oitment or cream to apply to the area.

I would not use anything like alcohol, that would burn her skin and may cause her to have more pain or might inflame the abrasion.

Good luck! Take care!
