Here are a few different illnesses and problems you should go over with your vet. If you do not feel like you are getting anywhere, find another vet for a second opinion. Bring a fresh urine and stool sample to your vet when you bring your dog. To get the urine sample, you will need a sterile plastic container. Follow your dog, when he lifts his leg to urinate put the container under the stream of urine.

Ask your doctor to double check dental disorders. Throat or mouth infections cause coughing and discharges from mouth or nose. Gingivitis develops when tartar or dirty teeth are untreated.

As stated earler dental problems can be swollen gums and loss of appetite. If the gums are red and inflamed he could have an infection, beginning of a root abscess, severe gingivitis or a variety of other dental problems.

If his gums are white, this could be a sign of a more serious illness. White gums indicate a low red blood cell count. This can happen when a dog's body is trying to fight off illness, such as infection or even cancer.

The coughing adds a whole new dimension to his original symptoms. First you should call your vet and tell him of this new symptom. See if he has any input, since he has been treating your dog. If you do not feel that you are getting enough satisfaction, then you maybe should get a second opinion.

In the meantime to help your dog move his bowels more comfortably you can add some canned pumpkin (not pie mix) to his ground beef. Add a tablespoon or two. You may want to prepare his meals by taking the pumpkin, some ground beef, some iams crunchies adding some water and letting it soak for a while until it softens. This will make it easier for him to eat with the swollen gums, will help his bowels and give him some well rounded nutrition.

I recommend at this point that you get the blood work done as soon as possible, so that you can start treating your dog for the appropriate illness.

Please let me know how you make out at the vet and what the diagnosis is.

Peace,
Christina

Reply to christina tavanian's Post: Yes,I think you have helped some as what to do to help him eat,I do not think it is all his teeth or he would not eat the hard foods when canned have been offered, stool is hard looking not like tar.I just can't spend 70.00 for blood work, with what I have already spent only to get a mabey answer from a vet who don't pull teeth that are in there solid! does that seem like alot for blood work last I had done for cushings was about 50.00(different vet)
