Loose stool

Sent to Pet Experts June 29 2004 at 10:17 AM

My puppy (Cairn terrier, 9 weeks old) has been having very
loose stools for 2 days. Today they are green and slimy. What
should I do?

Being that your puppy is young. I would put a sample in the ziplock bag and take it to the vet for a quick fecal check.
If that is negative you have a few things to consider. The food the Cairn is eating, whatelse the puppy has ingested, etc. I am not fond of giving these little guys anything for diarrhea until you figure out a cause. The puppy shouldn't be eating rawhides or pig ears or dog treats, their intestinal tracts are very sensitive...just like human babies. It should be strict puppy food and puppy treats.
Good Luck,

I had thought about that already. When going to get a
sample.... no lother movements have been like this. It is still
loose, but not green and slimy now. So I think it may have
been something he picked up in the yard and ate. I am going
to continue watching his stool oday, but I think I may have
panicked too soon.

This breed does tend to ingest lots of things it shouldn't! :)
Keep a close eye and don't worry about any one poop, only if there is a couple in a row that are abnormal.
