Are there any non-narcotic pain meds for Pancreatitis in my dog? The vet wants to find one to help him with pain yet not any narcotics anymore. He has been on Torbutol ,20mg 2 times dailt for the past year. She is wondering if a non-narcotic equal in strength to Torbutol can help kill the pain?

Optional Information:
Male , Age: 11 years

Already Tried:

Christina, I wanted to know what non-narcotic painkillers are - NOT narcotic. Lik NSAIDS of animal variety, to relieve the pain of these chronic attacks are happening about every 3 weeks.Hi lipase was in the 6,000"s and has come down to the 5800 area. She wants to take him off of the narcotics and see what an animal NSAID (?) to equal Torbutol? I have never heard of any and I study vet mediine because I want ton be as educated as possible about this. This is why I turned to on-line questions. Do you think you can give me an answer to the NSAID issue?

Hi Jane,
All I am aware of at this moment for NSAIDS? (Non-Steroidal-Anti-Inflammatory-Drugs) These non-hormonal products include non-prescription aspirin (and other pain [Hip Dysplasia and arthritis pain are common problems in dogs.] relievers) and prescription required products such as Rimadyl and Etogesic. These and other NSAIDS interfere with the body?s production of inflammatory molecules that actually trigger pain and swelling. Some non-prescription NSAIDs should not be used in dogs. All these products must be used with caution because there is potential for stomach and intestinal problems and prolonged blood clotting time. NSAIDs are used for low to moderate pain and discomfort.

Carprofen (Rimadyl Rx) is supposed to be a more potent pain-reliever and a slightly less potent anti-inflammatory than the other NSAIDS which are approved for dogs.

I'm going to send you to a webpage that discusses some of these medications. After you have had a chance to review, let me know what specific questions you have and I will see if I can get you some useful info.

Hi Christina, Thank you very much about the way you followed up and have offered to continue looking for a med for my dog that may work greater than Rimadyl!!If it is possible, I would like to get your personal on line address as you answer the question that is asked. Often I get people who do not provide anything different than I already know of. If you can come up with some other ideas, I will be hasppy to pay you again. Thank you so much for your help. He is like a child to me and I want to keep him as comfortable as possible. as I said before, Chamois lves to run to greet me when I honk coming up a 300' driveway!!! He is a miracle boy all of the vets have said. Thank you, Customer (name blocked for privacy). Sorry it took so long for me to respond - I had a problem with my grandchild I had to help with.
