Question

I have a teacup chihuahua who just went into heat ...

Sent to Pet Experts January 21, 2006 11:01 a.m.

I have a teacup chihuahua who just went into heat approximately (?) 20 days ago. As far as I know she has not mated (if any with jack russell). She has stopped 'red' spotting but is now spotting a "straw colored" discharge. Her nipples are swollen but belly seems flat. She sleeps alot or maybe I"m just watching her too closely & noticing that. could she be pregnant? Also would & could it be safe for a vet to abort a pregnancy safely in a chihuahua? If she is pregnant by the jack russell wouldn't the puppy (ies) be too large to deliver?

Optional Information:
Age: <1; Female; Breed: chihuahua

I do not like the abortion shots for dogs because they predispose the dog to pyometra, a dangerous uterine infection that is often fatal. What you CAN do, though, is get the dog spayed up to 40 days gestation. This will abort the litter and will prevent future litters.

An average heat cycle lasts 21 days so it sounds like you are on the tail end of this one.

Let me know if you still have questions.

i did not get an answer to some questions:
1-by her symptoms, could she be pregnant or no way.
2-would Jack russell/chihuahua puppies be too large for a chihuahua female to deliver?

To be specific, are you are telling me that she wouldn't be able to survive the pregnancy or the natural delivery of the pup(s)?

There is a good chance that she could not. You would definitely have to have x-rays around 55 days gestation to see if the puppies are too big for her to have naturally. If you are not prepared for the financial responsibility, you need to evaluate the situation and do what's best for you and your dog.

"There is a good chance that she could not" what?
Survive the Pregnancy? I"m assuming that you are referring to the delivery. If you mean the pregnancy, what are your concerns?

Also I'm a little confused over your previous answer....If she did not mate with the Jack Russell ever..then could her symptoms (ie: swollen nipples and swollen vulva & straw-color vag drainage)be just normal symptoms of the heat cycle?
