Sent to Pet Experts January 21, 2006 10:46 a.m.

We adopted a precious Golden Retriever that had been abused. She has made a wonderful, sweet friend for our Lab. She has one puzzling problem though. Her one eye waters a lot. She doesn't seem to be in pain, but she will "half-shut" it at times. I don't think that it is an allergy, because it is only one eye. Because we only have some of her background and the fact that some evil person had abused her, we are very worried. We had asked our Vet, but, he suggested that it was probably allergy related. Please advise us as to her condition and what or where we should take her. Thank you, Jackie B.

It's hard to say. These dogs ARE prone to allergies. I would go ahead and pick up some sterile saline (like used to lubricate human eyes, not the medicated contact solution) and use it twice daily for the next few days. If it's an allergy, this will help. If there's a foreign body in the eye, this will help flush that out as well.

Then see your vet if you still don't start to see some improvement.

Let me know if you still have questions.

Wouldn't her other eye also water??? Also, it will just start watering at completely different locations and times of the day/night. I have kept a jounal of sorts, and there is no rhyme or reason.

Also, thank you very much! I will try the sterile saline. Jackie Brei

You might or might not see both eyes water with allergies. It's hard to say. I would feel more led to think that she has an eyelash that is scratching the eye or some other irritant.
