I have a 5 year old Rottie who had emergency surgery last Saturday night, for gastric torison. We were at home when he started to have symptoms, Thank God, we caught it in time. He came through the surgery fine. When we brought him in yesterday for our regular vet. to check him, my baby was about 15 lbs. less then his normal weight. Should I be worried about this? I checked his report from the emergency vet and all his chemistry & hematology results seem in normal range to me, however I'm not a professional. He does not go back to our vet until next week and I'm quite concerned, hopefully just overeacting from last weekend. It has always been difficult to keep his weight down, he lives to eat. So this weight loss is very uncommon for him. Is it possible to loose that much weight from the surgery?
Thank You
Franne (Truckee's Mom)

Nothing at this point, my vet told me to wait and see what his weight will be next week when he comes in to have his staples removed

Yes the stress and fluids loss and the energy requirement for healing can cause the body to consume stored calories to cope qhich would result in the weight loss. His stomach may not be processing food quite as well as usual while it heals too.
See how he is next week and talk to your vet about it.

And you did a great job identifying it and getting your dog to care in time!

Thank You very much, I feel much better now.. Like I said, Thank God I was here when it happened, the only symptom he had at first was pacing with a lille bit of drooling. I actually has a hard time convincing my husband that there was something wrong. It pays to listen to your Gut at all times. Thanks again for you answer.
