My 8yo golden retriever's skin is slowly turning black all over her body and her hair seems to be getting coarser, as well. What could be causing this?

Does she itch? Any odor from her body?

Yes to both. She doesn't do alot of scratching or licking, but there are scabs beginning to appear on her chest and in the creases under her front legs -- similar to flea nests but she doesn't have fleas. Funny you should mention the odor because we've just begun to really notice that her baths don't seem to "last" anymore and have been wondering if the odor isn't related to her skin??? Her hair is also getting more sparse.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

I would have her checked for a thyroid problem as that is common in the breed and would cause the problems you are seeing.
Your vet can have the bloodwork run to check for this.
Hope this helps you!

Relist: I want a different opinion.
I didn't realize that the answer I accepted did not come from the same expert that asked me for further information.
