Question

My male feline just had a perineal urethosotomy done last ...

Sent to Pet Experts January 12, 2006 7:30 p.m.

My male feline just had a perineal urethosotomy done last Friday January 6th. He had a pain patch from Fri - Mon and they removed it Monday afternoon. He has been on antibiotics and a liquid pain killer mix since. He has also been eating a new diet since a couple of days before the surgery - S/D from Science Diet dry food, and IVD's Dissolution Diet - wet food. My friend that worrks at the vets office had given me laxatone to give to him on Monday cause i told her he didn't defacate since the surgery. Is this normal? I work in healthcare in a skilled nursing facility and i know alot of my patients are constipated or haven't gone for 2 weeks sometimes after a surgery. I also think that for 2 days by accident we gave him a double dose of the antibiotic. This was already 2-3 days after the surgery. I will call my friend anyway but i just wanted another opinion. Also is there anything else besides the laxatone that can be given to a cat that has a history of struvite crystals- i am mainly looking for a holistic approach. Also is there any other holistic approach to prevent urinary tract infections after this type of surgery. My vet says now he is prone to uti's and will be on antibiotics often. I do not want that - i am against antibiotics for humans i especially don't want my cat on them. The thing is they did the surgery as a last resort. He was so plugged up and they catheterized him for a week and he was still unable to urinate no matter how much he tried so they had to do the surgery. Is there any prevention for uti's and if not is there any holitstic approach to treat them. Thank you for your time. Sincerely Stormykins

The Laxatone will help with the constipation but not the crystals. The double dosing of antibiotics is past history so there is no use to worry about it now. I have used the Carpon in my cat and it seems to help. The vet I worked for for over 20 years does not believe in it but he is "from the old school". It isn't going to hurt anything. Keep his litter box as clean as possible and don't use the really dusty litter.

I wanted to know if it is normal and okay that my cat hasn't defacated in a week. I am trying to give him the laxatone but haven't difficulty doing so. I know the laxatone is not for the crystals. He had the surgery for the crystals and will now be on S/D diet for 2 months and then C/D diet thereafter.
