Question

my month old golden retriever has had flaky skin since day

Sent to Pet Experts January 10, 2006 6:10 p.m.

My 20-month old golden retriever has had flaky skin since day one. These flakes vary in size with the larger ones being over a quarter of an inch in diameter. Her skin in her front armpits and between her hind legs has always been rough and dark (almost black). We tried giving her “sensitive skin” dog food and saw no improvement. We’ve used omega oil supplements along with the “sensitive skin” food and saw no improvement. We’ve used medicated shampoos twice a week and saw no improvement. We’ve been feeding her a hypoallergenic dog food for the last three months and have seen no improvement.
She spends a lot of time scratching her face and rubbing her face on the ground when she’s out in the yard. The area around her right eye always looks dry. She likes to roll on her back when she’s in the yard and rubs against the furniture when she’s inside. She often goes into spins with the apparent goal of rubbing against someone or something. There are some minor bare spots on her hind legs where she appears to be chewing her fur off. Overall her coat seems a little thin when compared to other golden retrievers her age.
I believe this skin problem is affecting her disposition. She is manageable on a leash, with a pinch collar, but off the leash she is very aggressive and often snarls and barks at us. My wife and I love this dog dearly but she’s costing us a fortune and we don’t feel safe with this dog around our grandchildren. Can you identify the problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
