Question

took my year old dashaund to vet with limp after being

Sent to Pet Experts January 08, 2006 5:56 p.m.

took my 2 year old dashaund to vet with limp. after being x-rayed he diagnosed a pulled lligament and recommended that she be penned up for 6 weeks. We can't seem to do that as she and her sister cry all day long. She does not seem to be in any distress. Can I do anything other than keeping her penned?

Optional Information:
Age: 3; Female; Breed: dashaund

Already Tried:
penning, didn't work. antiinflamatory pills, 14 day prescription, but they did not work either. She is now on the pills again, but they are awfully expensive

ACCEPTED Check Mark

If she tore a ligament vs just straining it rest has not ever in my experience resolved the problem.
Vets always tell you to rest them though.
You can see if using Glycoflex (I get it at www.kvvet.com but other places stock it too) helps her.
I'd call the vet tomorrow and explain why confinement isn't really working for you and see if they can give you some calming meds for her (and maybe her sister too) to help with this or ask about other options based on his exam. As if for example a leg splint on that leg would work.
You can read here about the kind of surgery that it takes to repair a knee problem

Hope this helps you!

I'm not real sure about the torn ligament. I think she may have fallen off a picnic table outside (She is notorious jumper. This happened in September and she is still limping.

Vet gave me deramaxx 25 mg to be cut in half and give her for 14 days. This was 3 days ago. She had same medicine in september. Sorry to be so long-winded
