My 1 1/2 year old carin terrier that is perfect health suddenly started limping and will not put weight on her front right paw. We ascertained that the pain is in the middle pad. She weighs about 16 lbs. What should we do for her. She started limping after we let her out like we usually do before we go to bed....and now she won't put any weight on the paw. Pls help. Do you think we need to take her to a vet tonite?

If there isn't an excessive amount of bleeding or swelling then i wouldn't take her to a vet tonight. Have you noticed anything stuck between the pad or any kind of cut or puncture wound. I so remove the lodged item then clean the area with peroxide and apply nesporin or triple antibiotic ointment and wrapping it with gauze may not be a bad idea unless she is a chewer then you will be fighting a losing battle. If there is a cut or puncture then the same steps would apply.

Reply to Dale's Post: We checked her paw for all of the above and cleaned it with alcohol. She walked on it fine all morning and then this afternoon, she wouldn't put weight on it....but now she will again.   We can't find any cut or anything stuck in her pad. The answer you gave was common sense to any dog owner...we're looking to see if she may have fractured a bone or something.

If there is no swelling in the effected area then she doesn't have a fractured bone, yes the answer above was common sense but it is always best to start at the most common cause which can be overlooked very easily. Believe me it was in no way intended to insult you in any way but it is best to cover all the basics first. It could possibly be a tissue injury, most likely a bruise. If she done better after the alcohol was applied then I would continue doin it, it acts as a type of pain reliever for muscle bruising, strains and cramps. She could have easily caused injury to her pad by doing something as small as stepping on a rock that was just sitting at a bad angle.
