Feline My 9 year spayed male cat, Garfield started having a running eye and swelling on one side of the nose, he has a flatish nose and weighs about 18#, a true Garfield, about 10 weeks ago. The vet thought this may be a virus and put him on amoxicillian. It didn't work and he returned 10 days later and was put on cortisore and lycine for 10 days. Still no improvement. Sent to eye specialist, eye was fine, they took a sample of his swollen area and said the cells were strange and one very large cell. They thought it could be dental and sent us to another specialist. Surgery was done on this past Tuesday, and x-rays show a mass not in nasal area and about 8cm long that took in the small front teeth, 3 were removed but large tooth was all ok. All teeth we actually fine with no abcesses. Where the 3 small front teeth were removed a scraped biopsy was taken and sent to albany, ny. along with a piece of the growth growing on the front of his gum area (kinda like extra pink flappy skin. This specialist, practicing mainly dental surgery, said he has never seen anything like this in 31 years. Garfield is eating, sometimes not as fast as normal-some slowing to swallow, and pretty much him self other than what I described. Since going to the eye specialist he has been on Lycine 250 and 150 cliyndomycin. Have you ever heard of anything strange like this? He has always had shots, physical every year, inside cat with kittydoor to screen porch. The only medical problem he has ever had other than overweight is when he was a kitten a slight urinating problem that he seemed to cry when he went to litter box, vet had me change food based on magnisium and no problem after that. Thanks for your help.   Melody

Poor Garfield. Its sounds like this "growth" may have caused a blockage to his tear ducts and sinus pressure and thus giving those eye and nasal symptoms. It dies happen in people as well. The biopsy will tell you what type of lesion it was and where it originated from and where to go from there. I would consider making an appointment at one of the big vet facilities (Tufts, Cornell) if this becomes more progressive or does not respond to your current treatment plans.. The mag food, may have assisted with preventing blockages and pain - so hopefully all will go well.
Please keep us posted, if there is anything else you please please do not hesitate to ask. Thanks and good luck.

Actually to those at the major vet centers it is not that rare. I know a=of several cases that have been referred to Cornell over the last year - implying that the frequency is more common that what you have been led to believe.

Did you get the results of the biopsy? Since all this has been done, how has the swelling been? Same..less... Also, what blood tests have been run on him?? Were x-rays taken post surgery?

No results yet. Swelling appears same. X-rays and blood tests have been taken and are at the lab.

Ok so the bloodtests that were run...do you know exactly what was run? Also, as for the x-rays, was the lesion the same...bigger...smaller...post surgery? Which lab in Albany if you don't mind me asking?

This question is probably best suited for Feline Surgeon, etc. that may have had exposure in seeing this type of mass.
