Question

last night my newfie had a couple episodes of excessive

Sent to Pet Experts January 06, 2006 11:18 a.m.

Last night my newfie had a couple episodes of excessive drooling and licking (licking fur, fabric, floor, etc.). He also gagged a couple of times so I looked in his mouth to make sure there wasn't any foreign body. My husband said he was eating something outside maybe ?grass? prior so then I thought he might have an upset stomach. But he did not vomit. Also if I diverted his attention he would stop the licking but still would drool. What do you think?

Optional Information:
Age: 5; Male; Breed: Newfoundland

Already Tried:
diverting his attention, he sucessfully ate and drank

ACCEPTED Check Mark

I would have the vet check him for a tooth or peroidontal problem or something stuck in teeth or hard palate or gums etc today. Even a cut in the mouth can cause this or s string wrapped around the tongue.
Licking can also be a sign of anemia and dogs will lick and drool if they feel nauseaous even if they never throw up.
With a big dog one always worries about this being a pre bloat symptom. You can read about bloat here

But my suggestion is having the vet look at the dog today if you can possibly do that.
Hope this helps you!
