i ve been told that tear staining can be caused by minerals

I've been told that tear staining can be caused by minerals in the water or food that a dog eats. I thought it was due to the wetness of the fur. Is it possible to clear up the "brown look" by changing a dog's diet?

Already Tried:
Nothing because my vet said it's a characteristic of the Lhasa Apso and nothing can be done to prevent or cure it.
