Question

mysterious illness

Sent to Pet Experts December 31, 2005 1:38 a.m.

Hello- my dog chloee who is 6 yrs old, we have been battling a mysterious problem, 1st she started out with limb weakness moving from one limb to the next then she stopped eating and drinking normally - treated her with my vet for what he called tick fever, although she had never had a tick as far as i know, got through one round of antibiotics, and rimadyl for stiffness and pain, then the symptons reappeared after one week of no antibiotics then we tried a natural arthritis medication for one week - no change in her stiffness nor attitude, then she got to where she would NOT get up to eat or potty, tok her back to vet, she had gum infection on the left front side of the FRONT teeth not the back, the vet did a dental procedure, said she had mild tarter but could not see any reason for the infection, took blood sample while she was under for the dental, the blook sample came back platelets low, white cell count high red cell count low and high glucose in her system. Changed to a specific antibiotic for a blood infection the vet thought and have done two rounds of that antibiotic - 7 days per round, have now been one week without antibiotic and symptoms are reappearing, she has gained the 5 lbs back she had lost through all the sickness before but now she is terribly stiff and does not feel well. This is an inside dog 24/7 and I want another person's opinion; I have an appointment with the vet in the morning again. Please tell me honestly what you would do if this was your pet or patient. This sickness has been going on now for (4) months. I have read that the natural arthritis med's have shown some animals to test a higher blood glucose level than normal, read that somewhere on the net.
Thankyou so very much and any helpfull suggestions I am willing and openly awaiting any and all suggestions as to what step to take next. - I have allready thought that maybe she had diabetes, or cancer.

AS I stated above the vet ran a regular blood panel and the results showed her blood platlets were low, her white blood count high and her red blood count low, also glucose levels in blood were high. And thats all he told me about, I did not actually see the test results, so that is the best I can answer.

No the vet was just guessing when he diagnosed that, no blood work was done at first office visit.

I would first have that done...get an ehrlicia titer and see where its sitting. Just because you've necver seen a tick doesn't mean he didn't have any...it only takes one bite. Then you can rule that out if its negative and move onto other possible things like meningitis. Check out this website and see if these symptoms are similer to your pup:

Aseptic Meningitis

I received your answer and read the folowing suggested information, however before I am done with this session, can youplease tell me what other areas to follow if the ehrlicia titer shows to be normal, OTHER than aseptic mengitis, where else would you look for a diagnosis, Im not having much faith in my vet at the present time and want to pick your brain for every other avenue you would pursue if this was an actual clinical case of yours.
