Question

i have a mo import german shepherd female we taped her

Sent to Pet Experts December 29, 2005 1:32 p.m.

I have a 14mo import german shepherd female. We taped her ears and only one stood. The reason being, my vet cleaned her ears vigorously when she had an infection and I believe he broke the ear leather. I have heard of cosmetic implants to fix this problem. Please tell me my options if there are any. Thanks, Phil

Its not likely the ear leather was broken its more likely that it was weak leather from a genetic cause.
If you do not plan to show the dog you can fix the ear but remember that will not change the genetics behind it.
I've heard of people using a mesh in the ear and also small plastic support inserts to keep an ear up.
If she just has a crease in the ear sometimes just circling the ear there with tape so the ear stands and letting her work the ear muscles will help resolve this. Sometimes making sure there are no intestinal parasites will resolve it too.
But otherwise you may have to do some hunting around to find a vet familiar with fixing ears like this. You want someone who has done the procedure before so inquiries among people who show the breed or starting with your own vet or talking with a board certified surgeon might be your best bets.
Hope this helps you!

I am looking for guidance on a vet in the NYC area that can correct this problem. She has been tested for IP and is negative. The taping and or/mesh did not work either. It is not a crease, it is just a flop. The other ear stands perfectly. The floppy ear perks up outside when she hears something or is excited at times. I would like to resolve the issue and I have a full history on her with no problems like this noted back to her great grand parents. I really just need a viable alternative to implant unless that is the only route. If it is, I need the name of a qualified vet in nyc to do the surgery.
Thank you.
