I have a 2 yr old red nose pit named Baby. She is the sweetest creature, affectionate and loving.
We found out quite by surprise that she was pregnant. One day she was her lean, trim self and the next she was popping out at the seams. Over the last four weeks she has gotten so large Im becoming concerned. The dog she mated with is of all things a pure bread beagel named Buckley. What a combo, so Im wasnt too concerned with the puppies being to large for here but now Im starting to wonder. I grew up with animals and have assisted and or been present for the birthing processes of just about every type of farm animal you could imagine. And I have had 4 childern of my own so I can empathise with my mooso-momma, but she is really down/sad looking and sleeps quite a bit now not to uncommon but becoming excessive. I dont want to jump the gun and take her to the vet and have them c-section her when it might not be necessary had I just given mother nature a chance to work her magic. But I dont want to do anything to risk Baby's health or welfare. She is as much a part of our family like any other "human" member. We are very limited when it comes to money as well, which frightens me when I thing of all the possible costs I am looking at. What should I watch out for keep an I out for since we are not sure when she got pregnant.

Please give me some sound advice,

Sincerely,
M. Morgan

Since you are not sure when she got bred do you remember the dates that she was in heat? This can get us a little closer to a due date. Can you feel the pups move when she is laying still? Your safest thing would be to have an xray done so you can see how big they are, how many (so you'll know when she is done) and if one is in the birthing canal yet. You can also start taking her temperature rectally. Normal is 101-102 and it will normally drop below 100 within 24 hours of delivery. It may even go to 98. I am concerned with the fact that you say she seems depressed. Take her temp and get back to me. If it is over 102 and she is resting she may have an infection so she needs to see a vet asap.Is there a possibility she may have bred with a larger dog as well? I think an xray would be the way to go at this point.
