Question

my yr old cockerchow has suddenly become dizzy can t walk

Sent to Pet Experts December 27, 2005 7:42 p.m.

my 13 yr old cocker/chow has suddenly become dizzy, can't walk straight, vomiting, not eating, not drinking, just lying in her bed. she does have ear infections, bacterial, and we're putting in the recommended drops.the vet we took her to doesn't think this vertigo has anything to do with her ears. this has been going on for 5 days now. we make her stand and go in the yard to pee. and she will now drink some water. i gave her a little ham today and she gladly ate it ...that's a first.
we have nausea pills we are giving her and i bought pediolyte and she had a little of that tonight with the ham. no bowel movements for 5 days. vet thinks this is an old age disease and might just pass.
what else can i do?

yes, we have been carrying her out to the yard where she will then walk around and pee. we stand her up from her bed and bring her to the water to drink and today she ate ham from my hand. no hard food like we usually give her.
she tilts her heat to one side and her one eye is droopy, like a stroke. the vet did not mention this and what can we do and how is it related to an ear infection?

i just read the web site about vestbular disease.
i think that's exactly what this is. i had just cleaned her ears on thursday and she was like this on friday. all symptoms are exact.
do we just treat the ear infection and the other will hopefully clear up?
she seems to be a very little better each day.
please , we are at a loss for what to do

I would give the vet a call and see if he wants to start her on a stronger antibiotic. Some vets like to culture the ear in these situations to find out if one antibiotic will be more effective than another.
