(Not a Pet Question?)

i just brought my little year old abyssi

Sent to Pet Experts December 24 12:50 AM

i just brought my little 8 year old abyssinian home from
the animal emergency room....she had vomited somewhere
between midnite and 7am today........thereafter she ate
nothing and had nothing to drink....also she had been
hiding out in one of her secret places all day.......
i looked at her x-rays w. the doc, and could see a dark
area that had a small darkish area (about the size of a
pea) in it.   they hydrated her and told mne to bring her home, and bring her back tomorrow if she vomited some
more...no food until tomorrow nite, water is okay.......

she is listless and very limp if i pick her up....i am
very worried........here's my question: if she needs an
operation to remove the obstruction, what are her chances of survival? she is in generally good health--
heart and pulse are normal.....my regular vet is away til
tues. the 27th....does it sound to you as if she could wait until his return if she needs to be operated on?

i am very morried about this sweet little cat and wouldappreciate reading your thoughts....i guess my main
question has to do with survival, if part of her intestine has to be removed, how does she m anage to eat and move her bowels until the intestine is fully repaired....again, please tell me your thoughts.

Optional Information:
Age: 8; Female; Breed: abyssinian

Already Tried:
i took her to animal emergency, they did blood work, and x-rayed her, and hydrated her..

dear dr. diana,

yes i would love to hear from you. i simply had to get to bed.   .....mellie is still very quiet,
very withdrawn this a.m............but she is in
the room with me (even though her back is turned)
so she must be feeling a bit better..............not out of the woods yet....
rsvp.

Good morning- The most important thing is to keep Mellie hydrated and keep somthing in her stomach.Did the ER give her sub-Q fluids(under the skin)? Get some unflavored pedialyte and give her 3 droppers every 45 minutes for 2 hours. Then try some baby food meat with NO onions or garlic in the ingredients.Even one small spoon an hour would be suffficient to keep her from developing liver issues. The thing that concerns me is what is the pea sized object? Is it something she swallowed that is lodged in her intestine? If so you can give laxatone in the hopes she could pass it.Is it a little tumor? What did they suspect? If her intestne is obstructed and she cannot keep anything down THAT IS A MEDICAL EMERGENCY and her life would be in danger. If you can get her to retain food and water (no matter how little) Then you can wait for your vet.As far as the surgery and recovery your vet will do bloodwork to ascertain if her liver and kidneys can tolerate the anestesia. If so,and she is in good general health, her prognosis should be excellent.Let me know as soon as you get this what and how she is doing.

dear terri,

thank you for yours.........i dont know what that
little pea-shaped thingy is..the vet didnt specify
altho i asked a number of questions...they did say
however, no food til tonite-(sat)------and if she's
still vomiting today, bring her back for another exray....she seemed a bit better during the night, she actually PURRED when i brushed her....
she came out this morning and wandered around the kitchen....vereee sloowly, and sat near her bowel
looking tragic....i finally decided to give her
a teaspoon of some food the hosp. gave me....
my reasoning was how will we know if she's still throwing up if nothing goes down....

she is still pretty much hiding, however, but i
do agree w you----she needs little bites every few
hours..and as much water as she wants...(i think
i may have to force water, although she WAS HYDRATED only 8 hours ago..........i think she is
feeling a little better and i thank you so much.
i do feel now that i can wait until tues to have
her own doc. check her over--------providing, we
dont slip backwards.

FEEDBACK re mellie............FOR DR TERRI......

i took mellie to the ER as you suggested, and they x-rayed her and hydrated her......she seemed a bit better the next day, albeit sleepy...the doc told me she had a possible obstruction and gave me some rx food for her, which she had some
of 24 hrs later....she seemed pretty well until
about 48 hrs later, when she was gagging and her
sgtomach looked liked it was spasms......i brought
her back to the er--(migod! the day after xmas in the animal er was a zoo! it took 6 hours before we finally got out of there! at least in the people er there isnt so much barking!)--they
took x-rays again, and decided that she wasnt gagging, but was coughing.....
tomorrow i will take her to her own doc...in the
meantime--ie. today, she seems quite well..she
is eating, drinking, purring, and "making bread"

i think she is probably ok, but i am most grateful dr terri, for your prompt and wise responses. i was truly panicked and you helped
both mellie and me so much. thank you so much!

dear dr. terri...

i forgot to mention pellie who is extremely well
and as good as he is handsome--which is very. he
was SO GOOD during mellie's illness....he simply
stood there and watched over her, and gave her
lots of x's, and gave me moral support. i was
astonished because he is a great tease, and spends a lot of time charging at her and chasing her all over the house (she loves it by the way
because she often seems to be daring him to attack)
so thank you for your care and concern when i was
in a panic state about him, too.

much happiness to you in the new year....
