my 12 yr old sheltie has ulcerated scrotum

The last 10 days my sheltie has been chewing on himse how serious ?lf such that blood got appt with normal vet today sent to aanother since my vet has cast onhand can't prform he's there tonight

Already Tried:
went to ususual vet who sent me 11 miles to another vet who hasn't called yet but first said proposes removing scrotum will do biopsy first but hasn't called since noon today? is this best path?

I would say forgoing the biopsy and just neutering him and doing the scrotal sac removal at that time. It needs to be done and putting him thru 2 surgeries that more than likely will have the same outcome with a dog that age isn't worth the risk. I would definately have bloodwork done prior to the surgery though to make sure he's healthy enough to go thru it. Until then you can try putting an athletic supporter on him to stop him from licking until you an get him in.

I apologize, I assumed he was unneutered because thats is the most cmmon reason this happens. I need to ask a few more questions then....Was he bathed or groomed lately?
