Question

low platelet count

Sent to Pet Experts December 19, 2005 7:31 p.m.

My dog, Keeno, who is 8 years old and a Siberian Husky, about 2 weeks ago began forming blood clots on the outside of both pupils. The vet thought he got into rat poisoning. He is an indoor dog & no toxins in or outside the house. The vet took a CBC test & results are that he has very low platelets (14,000). She has him on 80 mg of Predisone twice a day & 200 mg of Doxycyclene twice a day. When she tried to draw blood from the neck, a blood clot formed. This was 2 days ago. Now his entire chin is filled with fluid & recently the right side of his mouth. He does not show any other symptoms but the blood clots in eyes & the swelling in chin/mouth. No blood in gums, stool, urine, or any vomiting. He drinks, eats, and still has energy. I am taking him back to the vet in 2 days if not change to check his swelling. The vet is also waiting for the test results on tick borne disease to rule that out. So far she is telling me that it is an immune mediated disease, but I am not sure what this really all means. His WBC & RBC counts were normal and his bone marrow is producing but his body is destroying the cells. Could you explain or give me anymore suggestions of what could be causing this? What is my Husky going to go through. Also, she did say that his liver & kidney enzymes are normal. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thank you, Tina
