i have a year old golden retriever last night

I have a 2 year old golden retriever. Last night, uncharacteristically, Bailey started to cough like he had a "fur ball". We have hardwood floors, and have caught him trying to lick up the fur. Occasionally, the cough produces a watery, foam like substances. He licks his lips constantly. I have done a google search, and the thought of "bloat" scares me. He has produced this foamy vomit twice last night, and so far twice today. He does not seem the least bit lethargic, and only coughs and vomits it seems after he gets excited. His appetite has been normal, however the vomit does not seem to produce anything solid. He was just tested for worms last week, (negative) because he had diarrea (sp?) and the vet perscribed him an antibiotic for a bacterial infection. I thought any number of these factors (eating the hair and antibiotic) could be causing his vomit. I am concerned about the possibility of bloat, even though everything I have read says death can occur within an hour. Should I rush hime to the vet, or do you think this may pass? Thank you for your help.

It really depends on what's causing the nausea. Dogs will usually start to lick things like crazy and drool when they get sick and they want to vomit. It brings it on and this makes them feel better.

In this breed, I would also be concerned that you are seeing seizure activity with all the lip licking.

I would go ahead and see if you can get some really bland food into him. I would start with about a tbsp of boiled chicken and white rice and see if this helps with the nausea. It will usually settle the stomach.

Then, if you don't see any results, you will want to give the vet a call.

Let me know if you still have questions.
