Respiratory Issue

Sent to Pet Experts December 16 08:30 PM

My 5 year old neutered male cat has a puncture wound on his leg. It has been infected and I have been cleaning it and treating it with Neosporin. (My ususal first aid for any wound.) Today he is wheezing and seems to have a respiratory issue. I thought he was snoring, but it seems to be more than that. Can this be related to the infection on his leg? Do cats get pneumonia from other unrelated injuries? What can I do for him? I live on Social Security, so cash is an issue for vet fees. Is there something I can try before taking him to the vet?

Yes, he comes and goes as he chooses, though has spent his time indoors (by choice) this week because I think he's not feeling 100%. The wound looks like a tooth mark, but I can't be sure. It's definately a puncture wound of some sort. Neutered, but not up to date on vaccines.

I would be concerned he caught something viral from the fight he was in and to esablish what it was and to treat it will require a trip to the vet. Respiratory issues can get bad very quickly so getting him on antibiotics quickly is the key to a speedy recovery. I know you are having money issues but the longer you wait to take him in, the worse it will get and the more it will cost to get him healed.

Reply to ZooCVT's Post: I just wanted to update you on his behavior - he seems to be swallowing a lot. I don't mean when he's eating or drinking, I mean when he's just lying in his box. Is this also indicative of an infection?

I appreciate your prompt response to my initial inquiry. Thanks for your help.
