I have a 10 year old collie. She will be 11 in January. She has started showing some weird signs. Not sure whether stroke or seizure. I have seen them while she is lying down. It is like she wants to turn over then all the sudden her head tilts back and she falls to one side and one or more of her legs go stiff. I drop to the floor and talk calm to her. Her eyes stay open. Then she just lays there for up to a minute and then sits up. Help me understand what is happening and if there is help. She is on 1/2 tab of deramaxx 1 time a day. Thank you.

It sounds like your dog has had a seizure. She definately will need to see the vet. If she is doing fine you may be able to wait until Monday, but if she continues to have these episodes, I suggest getting her in to an ER this weekend. I know it is more expensive, but if the seizures continue, she needs intervention sooner than monday.

Seizures in older dogs can be caused by many different things-metabolic disorders like kidney and liver disease, low blood sugar, and also brain tumors. Your vet will have to run some tests to try to determine the cause.

It is possible this was not a seizure, but from what you are describing I am highly suspicious.

Thank you for your prompt answer. She seems fine after. She even will eat and drink. She does act a little weak in her hind legs. I have only seen two episodes. Each only lasting maybe a minute from start to actually sitting up. Is she ok til Monday? She had one about 11:00 tonight and seems ok now. She just ate some of her food that I put cooked lean ground beef over. Now she is sleeping.

She had one last night and one tonight. She seems fine during the day. Could it be something with taking deramaxx in morning for arthritis? She seems weak at night. I let her out then she comes right in and lays down. After the episode last night and tonight, they were both after being outside first. I let her out frequently during the day and nothing has happened. Can activity in her being weak have caused this and is it ok to go to bed once she is laying down? Cause youo said to try and not leave her alone. Thank you.

I really hate to go to bed. But I am 8 1/2 months pregnant and I sleep on the top floor. She has not been coming upstairs with me in a while. That is one of the reasons I took her to the vet for deramaxx because that was unusual. She just can't do all the stairs anymore. She is not a dog that shows pain. I just have to look for unusual stuff. I would carry her up there but being pregnant and her being 80 pounds, I can't carry her up 10 stairs. Will she be ok down here tonight. I put a nice comfortable pillow for her and her food and water right there next to her.
