I have a friend in the UK with a wirehaired dachshund that is showing signs of pnemonia, labored, quick breathing, been x-rayed (which showed signs of white spotting agreeing with diagnosis). He is being treated with antibiotics and lascix (sp)to wich he responds but only for periods of time after which he regresses back to the same symptomology again. This has been going on for eight days. I have been reading of the equine virus which has gone over to dogs and wondering if the antibiotics don't do the trick because they are merely treating secondary symtoms of this type of virus. Owner and vet have not taken his temp. so that remains a question. But, is the protocol that they are using correct and in what period of time would one expect to see the shallow breathing and general contenance of the dog start to improve. I live in Westchester County New York and recently read about a virus that is hitting the kennels there with similar symptons....could that be a possibility and if so what is the treatment?

I've not heard that the canine influenza has made it overseas. They do have a pretty strong quarantine in place in the UK limiting the spread of disease into the dog population.
You can read about canine flu here

Another possibility is fungal infection vs bacterial pneumonia. It might be an antibiotic resistant bacterial infection too.
A tracheal wash and a culture might give them a better feel for what is going on and what medication will work against the infection.
Nursing care and making sure the dog is eating and drinking may be significant in keep the dog going. Chicken soup (home made is best) can help keep a dog hydrated and is nutritious. A Nutrical type supplement probably exists in the UK though it may be under another name adn that sticky stuff can keep a non eating dog going for a good while.
The antiviral Tamiflu may help too if this is a viral disease.

The lasix is a diuretic to make him lose fluids.
Hope this helps you!
