We had a German Shepherd female (spayed/no litters)in perfect health at 10 years of age. Suddenly one morning she started limping and her entire hind leg appeared bruised from top to bottom and over the next day or two swelled up terribly. We took her to the vet who wasn't sure what it was but put on her some medication and in a couple of days she showed a dramatic improvement. We followed the instructions of administering the medication and by all accounts she appeared to be recovering. Then suddenly she became lethargic and would not eat and a large 1/2 cantelope size lump appeared on her upper haunch. The next day the swelling went down again, she was still not herself but she nibbled at food and did not appear to be stressed or in any pain. We were going to return to the vet with her the following morning but she had passed away during the night. Do the symptoms I've described bring to mind ANYTHING you can think of as to what might have caused this? Thank you. Dallas Stermon saddlery@gwtc.net

Reply to Tammy Falkner's Post: I will check back in tomorrow with the answers you requested as I need to speak to our vet. I don't think a diagnosis was ever reached. One of the medications was Doxycycline 100 mg tablets administerd 3 tablets in a.m. and 3 tablets in p.m. Thank You.

My vet was not open today but I have a copy of vet exam. Can I fax it or Email it to you? Thank you

Thank you for your reply. She did show a few of those symptoms but only a few. The lethargy, the not really wanting to eat, but her eyes were always clear. There was no nasal discharge, no bleeding from the gums and I can honestly say I don't believe there was any exposure to a tick. She was a house dog and we used "frontline" religiously on both of our dogs and always checked them. As a matter of fact we probably have only found 3-4 ticks in the past few years and I don't think we've ever found one on the dogs. She did really like to eat cat feces and we always watched her close to prevent this but of course with several outside cats it was impossible to totally prevent. Could there be anything related to this?
Also thank you for your kind words of sympathy. She was a true "jewel" she had the sweetest personality of any german shepherd I have ever seen and we are both heartbroken.

Regarding my comment about the eating of cat feces. Is there a possibilty this could have had something to do with her condition? Thank you.

It really doesn't sound like this was your cause. The only way to know for sure is to get a necropsy (pet autopsy) and find out.

Wish I could be more help!
