My Yorkie is 8 to 10 days from whelping and she has pneumonia. The antibiotics may make her abort or cause joint problems in the pups, according to our vet. What do you think? She is much better after 3 days of treatment.

If she doesn't get over the pneumonia, she may run the risk of losing the pups anyway or being too weak when she has them that could put her at risk. I would continue the meds and in a few days have your vet recheck her and see if its ok to discontinue them.

Yes, I realize that. She had treatment at the vet's and he sent me home with an injection of Pcn. for that night, and one in the am, also an inj. of Baytril. Then tablets of 22.7mg. Batril Q 12 hrs. for 10 days. I don't want to take any more chances with her. I stayed home from work for 2 days to make sure she stayed quiet and the other dogs didn't bother her. She's walking around this afternoon, and barked a couple of times. She was so sick, her breathing was rapid panting and it exhausted her just to move. This is her 3rd pregnancy and she's 3yrs.old.
My co-owner says none of this is pregnancy related and she wants to breed her again. I want to keep my dog healthy. What do you say?

I would go with what your vet thinks. Unfortunately, sometimes breeders look at the females as more of a money maker than a family member...not all breeders but some and they don't think clearly when it comes to the health of the animal. It may not have anything to do with the pregnancy itself but there's no way to know for sure and being pregnant definately takes a heavy toll on their little bodies...especially 3 litters in 3 years. I would go with your gut and not be pressured into a decision that you may regret.

The breeder says that it's perfectly fine to "breed twice, rest once" but I can't help but think she might have been in a weakened state and her little immune system couldn't overcome the pneumonia bug. I do go with what the vet thinks, but once in awhile, he hasn't given us the best advice. She's actually a lot better today, and I'm grateful for that.

Reply to ZooCVT's Post: I'm sorry, the vet bill was $378.00! I'm totally broke now, and I wanted a dialog to be sure I'm doing the right thing. Thank you
