My 11 month old female standard poodle had her first

Sent to Pet Experts November 30 07:06 PM

My 11 month old female standard poodle had her first heat cycle which was long, and now is still somewhat swollen in her teets and vagina. There is no discharge and she is eating and drinking normally. She is not pregnant and her red blood cell count was normal as of last week. SHe is calming down, but so did my male at 11 to 12 months. She still plays and is acting like she normally does. Will her swollen glands go down soon or is it a signal of something worse?

Optional Information:
Age: <1; Female; Breed: Standard poodle

Already Tried:
CBC test- normal; pregnancy test-negative; I watch her food and water intake carefully

It is very normal for mammary glands to be enlarged/nipples enlarged during and after their heat cycle. In fact, after a couple months, the mammary glands can acutally fill up with milk if she has a false pregnancy. This is not uncommon, and is acutally a natural phenomenon in dogs. It usually resolves on its own with time. (If not, you can ask your vet for help).

It also takes several weeks for the swelling in the vulva to completely go away.

There doesn't seem to be anything to be concerned with here.Images available only to Customers.
