My friend is using my chocolate lab as stud. He has used him before and they mated, but my lab was 6 months old and there was no pregnancy. Now my dog is 15 months old and his bitch is in heat and TRYING to get mine to mount her, but he has no interest. He licks and smells her continuously, but will not mount no matter how much she begs. Whats wrong with my dog? Is he not male enough?(no pun intended)

Optional Information:
Age: 1; Male; Breed: chocolate lab

Like I said, He had no problem last year mating,It just didnt take. I brought the bitch here thinking he would be more comfortable, and that didnt work. He has recently started lifting his leg at other peoples homes! He has never done that!He really needs to be neutered and will be. My neighbor has wanted to use him for stud ever since he was a puppy. If I can just get him to mount her and be sucessful then I am going to get him snipped. Could he smell that she isnt ready even if she is begging for it? My neighbor is experienced in breeding his dogs, and has never seen this before. Is it true that when the bitch begins her heat she is only fertile for a couple of days in the heat cycle? could it be he smells that she is not ready yet?the bitch is about6 yrs old.   Thank you

He has never been allowed to jump up on people and is very good about it. He DID try to mount one of the kids when he was very young and that was nipped in the bud very quickly. He is very obedient and easy to train. Could I have ruined him for breeding by discouraging jumping and humping legs????It might also help you to know that he is a timid dog. very non aggressive. If I raise my voice to him, he rolls over and shows his belly. are these also signs of a thyroid problem? what are some of the signs? Thank you

Yes you may have accidentally taught him that mounting is 'bad' - that can happen.
With thyroid issues you might see thinning hair, obesity, sometimes timidity but that can be something else entirely too, and maybe a little sluggishness.
I think he is a submissive male and in the world of dogs they don't make it to mating status very often.
An artificial insemination with collection of semen by the vet might be the way to go. Its not expensive although you and the vet can get an awful case of giggles depending on your temperaments and its easy on the dogs and sure makes a vet visit far more anticipated by a male dog as a good thing!
