My 11 year old Bichon neutered male has been diabetic ...

Sent to Pet Experts November 29 11:00 AM

My 11 year old Bichon neutered male has been diabetic for 6 years and he has Cushing's disease. Two days ago we was given his Hunmulin -U insulin shoot of 8 units after eating. Within 3 hours he began to have severe tremors from head to tail to the point that he could not stand. He was breathing very heavily and was disorientated. I gave him a very small piece of cholate and within an hour the tremors subsided. I took him to the emergency vet hospital and they did a cbc and urine test and I was told that they were on the high side of normal. My question is, did my pet have an insulin shock episode and did I do the right thing in giving him a smsll piece of cholate.

Optional Information:
Age: 11; Male; Breed: Bichon

Already Tried:
Gave him a small piece of cholate and took him to emergency vet hospital where cbc and urine were done.

It does sound like an insulin issue. You may need to work again with your vet on regulating your pet's dosage. SOmetimes there is a shift in how much is needed.
While the sugar in the chocolate might have been right you should know that chocolate is toxic to dogs and should not be given to them.
Better to have used some other source of sweet than chocolate.

No harm done though with such a small amount and the sugar may have saved him!
Hope this helps you!
