Reply to Tammy Falkner's Post: Is there any way we can tell if our dog, Rusty
is dehydrated? He has multiple myeloma and has been taking benazepril 20mg and norvasc 5mg for his high blood pressure. He also has been taking
prednisone 10mg for the cancer, and melphalan 1.7
mg also for his cancer. Over the past few days,
he has been getting worse, in that his eyes are closing and the bottoms are droopy. He has very little energy to move. When he stands up we have
to help him up sometimes, but he will just stand
there and stare at nothing[outter space]? Can you
please advise us what we can do for him now, since he is our BEST FRIEND. Thank You George
and Maryellen.

The only way to tell is to lift the skin at the back of the neck. It should fall right back in place when you drop it. If it doesn't, he's dehydrated. But this is hard to see if you don't know what to look for.

For tonight, I suggest that you give him plain pedialyte with a syringe in the mouth and this will help if the problem IS dehydration. Then see your vet in the morning.

Let me know if you still have questions.
