My one year old akita lost her balance today and was unable to walk without falling. It happened once before when she was about 5 months old. Tried to get her to vet but unable to get her up. She is not able to walk without problem. What could be causeing this to happen?

There could be a few causes for this. The most common cause is vestibular disease. This might even cause stroke-like symptoms (staggering, one sided weakness, drooling). If this is the case, there is often an underlying cause like an ear infection.

If she is not eating well, you could also be seeing the effects of hypoglycemia. If you suspect this, you can use a little karo syrup on her tongue and see if it helps.

This breed is also prone to seizures. If you have not ruled out seizure activity, you need to see the vet to do so.

Let me know if you still have questions or if you want to discuss this more.

This unable to walk without staggering and falling lasted around 30 minutes. She is walking fine tonight. She is so big I was unable to get her up because she was being stubborn and didn't want to go. I will take her to the vets and have her checked over, I do have insurance on her. Hopefully it won't be anything major. I thank you for you expert advise. Seems strange it only happens once in a blue moon. She is on a good diet so I know that can't be the problem.
