Question

I have a 16 year old schnauzer who is healthy for his age.

Sent to Pet Experts November 08, 2005 8:52 p.m.

I have a 16 year old schnauzer who is healthy for his age. Just recently he is having episodes where he collapses, cries in pain, urinates, then is perfectly fine. He stays alert the entire time. What could be causing this? We just had a blood work up done and except for slightly elevated liver enzymes, his results were good. Any ideas? Thanks,   Lisa

Optional Information: Age: >12; Male; Breed: schnauzer
Already Tried:
Vet & blood work up

Have you had any x-rays done? Is he neutered? Does he have normal bathroom habits...normal urine and bowel movements?

We have not had any xrays done, but everything else seems to be fine, he doesn't have accidents during the day or evening and has normal urine & bowel movemnts except for these episodes. He has collapsed 4 times in the last month. Twice today. Once this morning, he woke up and just collapsed but no urine. Then this evening when I went to take him out he ran down our hall, about 30 feet, then collapsed with the symptoms I described earlier.

REPLIED Check Mark

I would be concerned with his age, a impingement that is causing the paraylsis. Osteophytes or bridging on the spine can cause the nerves to be pinched depending on how the move. An x-ray would tell you further if this was the problem. I would ask you vet for spinal and hip x-rays to see whats going on in there.

If this is the cause can it be treated at this age? Thanks

Yes it can. There are a few medications that will help if this is the problem including the use of supplements like glucosamine but your first step is definately an x-ray.

One more question I failed to ask..when she collapses, is she alert? Does she get right back up?

If this is the cause can it be treated at this age or is my dog destined to be in frequent back pain? Thanks

ACCEPTED Check Mark

She may still have back pain if this is the cause but it can be controlled with medication.
