Question

I have an 8 yr old, male golden who has been hospitalized ...

I have an 8 yr old, male golden who has been hospitalized since last thursday due to vomiting, watery diarrhea, not eating, very thin, lethargic, weak and shivering. Initial testing was thought to have addison's. Did the ACTH(?) came back negative. Now his diarrhea has bright red blood, he is eating, has gained a couple of pounds and otherwise back to himself. The vets are puzzled. Tested negative for parvo. Positive for heartworm and lyme. Any idea as to what this may be. X-rays showed nothing in his bowel, gave him a barium enema to help coat his colon or intestine. The rest of his blood work is normal. Other than the initial dehydration and the potassium and sodium tipoff for addison's the blood work has been okay and now normal. I hope it's nothing too serious. The vet will be doing an ultrasound wednesday and consulting with another type of dr that day. Help please. Becky

ACCEPTED Check Mark

I'm presuming they also tested for coccidia, giardia, campylobacter and other micro organisms?
You can read about addisons here to see why that would be a good test to have done
www.marvistavet.com/html/addison_s_disease.html
Another possibility is bacterial overgrowth
www.dogstuff.info/dog_show_crud.html
and here
http://www.thedogplace.com/library/DogCare/Dog_Show_Crud.htm
And lyme disease can cause all sorts of odd symptoms and if the vet did not check for other tick carried diseases that could be part of the issue too.
If he his getting better with treatment you can ask if more testing needs to be done or just more treatment.
Hope this helps you!
