I have a German Shepard who is 13 yrs. old and suddenly in the last 3 weeks he is having trouble walking on his back legs. His gait is similiar to a drunk walking. He doesn't appear to be in horrible pain but I am sure he hurts. He is very alert, eating well, no fever, no bowel problems, hearing is fading, sees well. I took him to his vet here in San Diego, Ca. and he says there is nothing to do for him because it is old age and his spine is wearing away. He gave me something for pain for him: Previcox and he seems comfortable but can't walk very well. Please help me, I don't want to put him to sleep because he is so alert. What can I do ?

You can try some holistic remedies including accupuncture, accupressure, Glucosamine, massage and even a magnetic pet bed. You don't have to give up just yet!

Are the symptoms stroke-like? One sided weakness? Or is it just the rear? Are you seeing any drooling? Facial slackness?

Ok, thanks..I am starting him Glucosamine now. He has no stroke symptons. He is very alert, barks at strangers, watches everything like a hawk. He just can't control his legs. No drooling. He eats just fine and drinks water when he gets thirsty.
          Thanks very much
