My 14.4 pound dachshund fot her shots (full rabies, pravo, etc.) today at 4pm. Around 6:30pm she began to scratch, rub her muzzle on anything and everything, shake her head like she had something in her ears and was generally miserable. We gave her a benadryl for what seems to be an allergic reaction to something. By 9pm she had broken out in hives over most of her body. My question is - how often can I safely give her benadryl to quiet the reaction?

It does sound like she is having an allergic reaction to the vaccine. Be sure and request a different brand in the future.

You can use up to 2 MG of benadryl per lb of dog every 8-12 hours.

Keep a close eye on her breathing because a reaction this strong can close the airway.

Let me know if you still have questions.

Reply to Tammy Falkner's Post: Well I guess we won't be giving her any more tonight! Gave her 1 at 7pm and another at 9:30pm. But the hives have gone down, she breathing which was rapid and shallow has slowed and deepened and she doesn't look as miserable as she did before. Her ears have also lost the redness and heat of earlier. Will call my vet in the am to advise him. Thanks so much for your help. Worse than kids - always after hours or on the weekend but wouldn't trade my three for anything.
